Most wine lovers around the world are familiar with the fact that the best wines made in America come from California. Most of the wineries near San Diego are located north of the city in the areas of Temecula, Escondido and Rancho Bernardo. Temecula, a wine growing region since 1968, has the greatest number of vineyards and gorgeous views. Callaway Winery is perhaps the most famous, due to its award winning wines and wide distribution. Falkner Winery is a great place to experience different types of wine, as they harvest seven different varietals.
Bernardo Winery in Rancho Bernardo is considered a "destination" vineyard. Fine wines, olive oil and home made pastas are all produced here. A coffee shop and salon are on-site for your pleasure.
Orfila Vineyards, located inside the San Pasqual Valley's Agricultural Preserve, is worth a visit for the wine and the spectacular scenery. This winery is particulary popular for weddings and the rolling hills and vines contribute greatly to the romantic feel.
Most of the wineries are located within a forty-five minute drive from San Diego and are easy travel distance from each other. A weekend spent here among the hills, ocean and rows of vines will be remembered for a lifetime.
