San Diego Wild Animal Park
Run by the world-famous San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is a popular attraction in Escondido, about 30 miles north of San Diego. The 1,800 acres of the park are home to over 3,500 animals in natural and spacious enclosures depicting the terrain of Asia, Africa, Australia, and more.
The ideal way to visit all of the animals is to hop aboard the Wgasa Bushline Railway monorail for a one-hour tour. Predator animals are kept apart from their prey by the use of deep moats rather than cages and fences; during the summer months, the animals are active into the early evening when the temperature drops to a comfortable level.
In addition to the monorail tour, visitors find the many animal shows and demonstrations to be both entertaining and educational. Seasonal events such as summer camps and scheduled sleepovers are scheduled regularly.
The monorail tour and all shows are included in the admission charge for the park, which is $35 for adults and $25 for children. Parking is an additional $8. Park hours are 9:00 am to 6:00 pm through June 26, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm June 27–September 7, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm September 8–October 4, and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm October 5–December 18.
