In July, the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition attracts participants and thousands of viewers from all over the world. Held at the Imperial Beach Pier in San Diego, this event features a street festival, a parade, a sandcastle competition, a separate children's sandcastle contest, and fireworks over the pier. Sandcastle-building teams compete for over $21,000 in prizes; viewing is free, but only lasts till high tide destroys these sandy works of art. |
