del mar race track

The upscale town of Del Mar, located just minutes from San Diego, is well known for the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds. The racing season runs from mid-July through early September; in 2009, the racing dates are July 22 through September 9. Post time is 2:00 pm (daily; closed Tuesdays), except on Fridays, when post time is 4:00 pm. Nine races are run each afternoon; post-race concerts and other special events are also a major attraction here.

The history of the racetrack at Del Mar extends back to 1933, when Bing Crosby established the Del Mar Turf Club. It was instantly popular with many of Hollywood's most famous names, including Desi Arnaz, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and Betty Grable. Though the old-time glamor days have passed, the racetrack remains a popular summer gathering spot.

Stretch run seats are $6 each, and reserved seating is $5 to $15. Clubhouse admission is $10 per person, which includes popcorn. Prices for Opening Day are higher. Children 16 and younger get in free; senior discounts are available. The Del Mar Diamond Club is a free membership club that provides half-price admission for the season as well as special offers and promotions.

Special events for the 2009 racing season include the Western Regional Chili Cook-off and Salsa Contest (August 1), the Reggae Festival (August 22), and the Pacific Classic Racing Festival (September 4 through 7).

To reach the Del Mar Racetrack, take the Via de la Valle exit from the Interstate 5 freeway and head west to the racetrack. The Amtrak and the local Coaster trains stop at Solana Beach, just a few miles from the racetrack; a free double-decker shuttle bus runs to and from the train station and the race track.
